Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Detroit at 488 Selden St, Honest John's offers an authentic American dining experience that satisfies cravings from breakfast through late-night bites. Known for its welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere, this beloved spot serves up hearty, classic comfort food with a creative twist that appeals to all kinds of diners, from early risers to night owls.

Start your day right with their thoughtfully curated Early Bird Menu, featuring comforting staples like housemade Beef Chili brimming with tender ground beef, green chiles, and fresh vegetables, or the equally flavorful Vegan Chili packed with beans, corn, and vibrant peppers—both priced at just $3.95 and crafted to awaken your palate. Dive into creamy Cheddar Grits ($4.75) that melt in your mouth, or savor perfectly cooked eggs in your preferred style, including vegan eggs for plant-based patrons.

When brunch calls, Honest John's shines with a lineup of classic American sandwiches. The BLT is a crispy, fresh assemblage of bacon, lettuce, tomato, and Duke’s Mayo on your choice of toast, served with a crisp pickle spear—simple but executed to satisfaction. Fans rave about the BURGER, a juicy half-pound ground beef patty crowned with melted American cheese, housemade HOJO sauce, and crisp veggies on a buttery brioche bun. It’s a burger experience familiar yet distinctive, delivering robust flavors and an indulgent mouthfeel at $14.25.

For those looking to quench their thirst, Honest John's extensive beverage list provides everything from the nostalgic fizz of CocaCola Original Taste and Diet Coke to the invigorating bite of Ginger Beer and caffeine lifts with Red Bull. Whether you’re sipping a classic soda or taking a guilt-free Red Bull break, these options round out the meal with refreshing balance.

The ambiance at Honest John's is as genuine as its name — informal, friendly, and with a laid-back vibe that invites you to linger. Regulars praise the comfortable setting and attentive staff, discovering joy in both familiar favorites and vegan-friendly options that show a thoughtful awareness of diverse tastes. Though some long for a return to the pre-pandemic magic, the overall experience remains satisfying, delivering great flavors with generous portions, especially late into the night given its 2am closing time.

Whether you're craving fluffy eggs smothered in savory sausage gravy, perfectly crispy home fries that strike the ideal balance between crunch and softness, or indulgent chili cheese fries that comfort and excite, Honest John's promises a taste of Detroit’s hearty, unpolished charm. It’s a go-to spot where the food feels like a warm handshake, and the vibe echoes the city's resilient spirit.

Honest John’s is a must-visit for anyone in Detroit looking to enjoy classic American flavors served with sincerity, a friendly atmosphere, and a sprinkle of local character.

I used to love this place, but like a lot of restaurants, I think it lost some of its Magic touch when COVID hit. We used to go all the time, but now we just go every once in a while in hopes that one of the times we go, the place is back to how it was before. The last time we went, we took my Cousin's, and it was still a decent overall experience. I still feel the food is down a level and the sitting is a little messy. We had to sit by the door, and when it's cold, every time someone goes in and out you can for sure feel the difference. As this area continues to come up though it is in a nice location, also only about a 7-minute drive from one of Detroit's historic buildings that was recently renovated, "Michigan Central."

Like most places in Detroit, especially during the winter time I originally thought it might be a dive bar, but turned out. I was only half right one of the best breakfasts I had visiting my family in the area, The sausage gravy was Seasoned very well on the biscuits and gravy eggs were fluffy And the only time I have ever enjoyed home fries, crispy on the outside fluffy and soft in the middle.

Honest Johns rocked good biscuits and gravy, excellent fruity pebble French toast. Vegan options/subs are all over the menu, making it easy for everyone. Weirdly they didn’t have any milk for coffee only creamer/non dairy creamer not my personal preference but it was fine. The restaurant has a cool vibe and very friendly staff. The sign on the wall says men lie, so it’s up to you if you want to trust a man’s review.

Stopped in before a show at the Masonic Temple.i ordered the Johnny John burger and chili cheese fries, plus bottled Strohs beer. My brew was chilled, and the burger juicy. Just ñ. The burger alone could have filled me up but since I ordered it I dug into the chili cheese fries. The portion size is great, but the chili didn't do anything for my taste buds, uncharacteristically bland for a Detroit chili. I'd come back but order just fries as they had a nice flavor on thier own. Cool joint over all

Such a fun spot with cheap drinks! I only paid $5 for my gin and tonic, and was very pleased about that. Josie was superior, what a friendly and cool person. So happy we met! Food was good although - the burger was too big to eat! Although we do wish the toppings for the fries was more plentiful, we wanted to see more jalapeños! Staff was nice and the people there were super friendly. Overall a really good experience.

Some vegan items on the menu but no plant based milk to go with coffee. The french toast tasted great but even their full order is rather small. 4 pieces of toast but they're not full slices,.. some pieces looked like they were cut off by hand. Not very filling for the price you pay and def not a great presentation. Our server was not friendly at all. The atmosphere is of an upbeat diner with catchy decor and great music.

What an awesome dining experience. Definitely not your typical small diner. The decor was fun. Music was great and not very loud. The egg scramble was delicious. Good breakfast options and very AFFORDABLE. Our server was awesome. Didn't catch his name. He was very friendly. My group enjoyed their cocktails. Pace yourself. They are also open late. I would definitely recommend. SN: the bathroom looks a little sketchy with all the graffiti but it was very clean.
